Comrades, friends and all working and poor people living on or travelling through the Iberian peninsula.

We southern Africans wish to express our deep disgust at the terrorist bombings of commuter trains in Madrid on March 11 with so much loss of life and limb. We join our voices with the millions of “ordinary” people who totally reject indiscriminate killing by faceless cowards as in any way justifiable, for any cause.

As people living on a continent that has experienced not only similar terrorist bombings (in Kenya and Tanzania), but also the murderous policies of the proxy regimes of French, British, Russian, Portuguese and American capital, we empathise with your pain. That pain, inflicted on you, our sisters and brothers, by heartless people without conscience, cuts to the heart of our shared humanity, regardless whether those responsible consider themselves inspired by faith or politics.

We stand united with the victims and their families, regardless of their personal creeds, recognising that we are all being used as canon-fodder in the wars of the wealthy. We beg you to refuse to allow your anger to be turned against your neighbours, whether Basque, Muslim or north African, by cynical politicians. Basques, Muslims and north Africans travelling through Madrid are doubtlessly also among those so callously murdered. They have bled, died and cried with you.

We trust you to not be swayed by hysteria drummed up by adventurers on either side of the supposed “War on Terror”, but to examine your hearts on the question of your government’s support for the invasion of Iraq and on the question of its opposition to the self-determination of the Basque people.

We celebrate the egalitarian principles that united all freedom-loving peoples of the world during the Revolution of 1936-1939. We celebrate the people and spirit of the Madrid that withstood the fascist bombardment of those years with dignity and resolve. Let us together raise again that eternal cry of all who unite to demand the right to be free from terror:

NO PASARAN!

De los activistas de Africa del sur sobre los ataques terroristas en Madrid

Compañeros, amigos y a todos los trabajadores y pobres que vivan o están de paso por la península ibérica.

Nosotros, africanos del sur, deseamos expresar nuestra aversión profunda a los bombardeos terroristas en los trenes de cercanías de Madrid el pasado 11 de marzo con la tanta pérdida de vida. Unimos nuestras voces con los millones de personas “sencillas” que totalmente rechazan los asesinatos indiscrimandos e injustificables por cobardes sin rostro, de cualquier forma o causa.

Como personas que vivan en un continente que no sólo ha experimentado bombardeos terroristas similares (Kenya y Tanzania), pero también las políticas asesinas de los regímenes apoderados del capital francés, británico, ruso, portugués y americano, simpatizamos con vuestro dolor. Ese dolor, infligido en vosotros, hermanas y hermanos, por personas sin corazón ni conciencia, llega al corazón de nuestra humanidad compartida, sin importar si los responsables se crean inspirados por la fe o por la política.

Estamos unidos con las víctimas y sus familias, no importa sus credos personales, y reconocemos que todos somos carne del canon en las guerras de los ricos. Rogamos que neguéis a permitir que vuestro enojo se usa contra vuestros vecinos, bien vascos o musulmanes o africanos del norte, por los políticos cínicos. Indudablemente hay vascos, musulmanes y africanos del norte de paso por Madrid entre aquellos asesinados de modo tan cruel. Ellos han sangrado, se han muerto y han llorado con vosotros.

Confiamos en que no vais a ser tocados por la histeria creada por aventureros de ambos lados de la supuesta “Guerra contra el Terror”, y que, al contrario, examinarais vuestros corazones sobre el apoyo de vuestro gobierno a la invasión de Irak y sobre su oposición a la autodeterminación del pueblo vasco.

Reiteramos los principios de igualdad que unieron a todos los amantes de la libertad del mundo durante la Revolución de 1936-1939. Nos invocamos a las personas y el espíritu de la Madrid que resistió el bombardeo fascista de esos años con dignidad y resolución. Levantamos juntos ese grito eterno de todos que se unen para exigir el derecho para estar libres del terror:

¡NO PASARAN!
